How fascinating! Yes, it does sound a laughably small amount now, but was a lot of money then. Thankyou for sharing this with us.

I have said this on a prior occasion. What a splendid firm to have been associated with. They certainly appreciated their work force, and treated them accordingly.

Ted; when I became an apprentice at Walker Bros. in 1944 I was given a bank book by them with 5 shillings in the account.
The pensioners Christmas bonus of £10 was started by Ted Heath in 1972 and has remained at £10. It should be over £90 to cater for inflation.

My dad worked at Walmsley's and they used to put on quite a lavish party for the kids at Christmas.

Ernie.
I also received a bank book I can't remember how much was in it, or which bank it was,Trustees or William Deacon. Good company to work for but we did not a day off for The Coronation on Tues.2nd June 1953 unlike a lot of the other companies.

Ted; entry in my 1953 diary for Tuesday 2nd June reads:-
Holiday. H.R.H Queen Elizabeth 11 crowned at Westminster Abbey. Stayed in all day and listened to wireless. Weather cold and showery.
I`d worked on Monday 1st June, also Wednesday 3rd June, which was coldest June day in France for 77 years.
