Anybody know them?
winder; I don`t know who they are but I`d a distant relative, Bert Smallshaw, who was part of the crew before the second world war. I also remember other loco`s `Wantage` and `Lindsay`.
I served my time at Horwich Loco Works at 21 I went to John Pit for two years, it was quite a shock from working on main line locos to working on the 0-6-0s at John Pit, especially unwheeling a loco without an overhead crane, we had to jack it up one end at a time. Enjoyed every minute, the other fitter at that time (1954-5) was Cliff Moss lived in Standish Lower Ground, or Shevington, anyone know of him?
I seem to recall that in the late 70s and early 80s the Lindsay was preserved at the now defunct Carnforth Railway museum.
Hello Winder. Today reminds me of the Giants Hall to John Pit walk! Nice old pic, thanks for posting. Flaggy
Cracking pic! Not seen this one before.
Yes, Lindsay is preserved. It is privately owned. I think they like to keep shtum about its whereabouts, as similar items have attracted a lot of vandalism!
Hello Campers, thanks for the comments.
I remember seeing Lindsay up at Carnforth in the early 90s, Flying Scotman was in at the same time under repair.
The photo was E Mailed to me by Steven Oakden he was the author of The Standish Collieries Railway
I think Clifford Moss who lived next to ST Annes Church in Shevie passed away about 17 yrs ago it would been him .
To Alan Lad, yes Clifford Moss did live near the church, I remember when you stepped in through the front door you had to step down into the house, it was much lower than the pavement, and there was a steel rail along the roadway. It is sad to hear of him passing away, we had some fun at John Pit.
Ernest there was a Bert Smallshaw who lived in Vicarage lane would that be him.
There was a Clff Moss who lived at the bottom of St Annes drive, he use to ride a motorbike
Yes Mick, he did live at 26 Vicarage Lane.
I remember him Ernest he was also related to a Eric who live a couple of doors down
Cliffs dad cut mens hair int shed his mum was Lily Eaves I think Mick would have gone Shevie school with an Eaves.
Only Cliff I know who lived there and his dad cut hair in a shed was Cliff Foster his dad was Tom and mother was Lily
Cliff married a miss Blackburn who used to teach at St Maries
I think Bert lived on Wigan Lower road in Standish Lower Ground across from the school
I think my great uncle was Bert Smallshaw, I would love to hear any memories of the Smallshaws from Standish lower ground as I never knew them, my father was William (sadly passed away in 2017) and his father Frank, I know they used to have connections to the John Pit cottages, I beleive these have now been pulled down, and they were from mining stock.
