This is Lamberhead Green Industrial Estate. My mother worked there at Plesseys for many years. Before Plessey took over, the factory was Garrard's and produced record-player decks.

Hi Neil My late wife worked with your mother and your mother was my aunt

Yes Barry, and Jean and I were in the same class at secondary school. Some years earlier, when my mother was working, I used to walk near the site where this building is and come to your house during holidays, so that your mum, my Auntie Maggie, could look after me during the day. I'm not sure what the building was used for at that time, but "Industrial Reels" and "Remploy" were close by.

It was GARRARD'S, where they made record decks before Plessey took them over.

Yes Ron, it was Garrard's, as I said in my earlier post: my mother worked at Garrard's before Plessey took over. I was wondering what the building was used for before Garrards. A few of the buildings on the industrial estate were run by the same company e.g. Triangle Value No 1, Triangle Valve No 2 etc. and I was wondering if "Industrial Reels" used more than one building at the time before Garrards.

Garrard"s record deck production ceased about 1979, sold to Brazilian Co. Gradiente Electronica for a nominal fee.

A brief history of Garrard, indicating links with Plessey can be found at http://www.garrard501.com/history.html

With reference to Ron Hunt and Neil Rigsby comments the Plessey factory manufacturing Garland’s turntables started making turntables in 1963 early. Prior to Garrard’s production the factory manufactured / assembled printed circuit boards for
Television, radio and Car Radio’s which were finally
Assembled at The Plessey Factory in Ilford Essex.
The assembly started in about 1959 and ceased in
1963January. The factory was then handed over to
Garrard for the assembly of turntables. I worked there from August 1962 till March 1963 and lodged at Upholland . Prior to Plessey I think it was used by Remploy.

At that time early 60's Garrard decks were one of the best record decks around.
