The printers worked from 7pm on Thursday evening, until 7am the next morning, it was of course web-break after web-break, (the newsprint snapping) that ground the press to a halt. They managed to print 50,000 copies of the Observer and John Dakeyne who stayed with the printers all night lost his voice against the noise of the press. At 11am (Friday) company secretary Tim Ellis read out John's speech at the Blessing-of-the-press ceremony.

By Saturday morning the entire edition was sold out, as demands came in from newsagents for more copies, hurried arrengements had to be made to print more papers.
