The Crabtree Press roars up to speed churning out copies of that weeks edition of the Wigan Observer. Terry Hateley checking copies next to the folder, Peter Lynch checking pages next to the press with other minders and stackers.
Terry, spent 10 years as a printer for the Observer, starting as an apprentice age 15.

Having a good look at this photo of the press room, I can't seem to remember some of these gents. Trevor Lowe, Terry Hateley and Peter Lynch are seen, but the likes of Bob Fishwick, Cyril Goodman, Cliff Roper, Derrick Smith and Frank Turner aren't there? I have every name from each department at Woods Street, and these chaps were still working there at that time.

Hello Colin,
I worked in the accounts department 73-77. Am I right in thinking that Terry was a Liverpuddlian? I know that there used to be a bloke called Frank who worked on the franking machine(believe it or not) in the accounts department and helped out in the printing room occasionally. I remember Mike Carrol one of the photographers who I believe died dreadfully young. This photo looks like its been taken from the landing to the photographers room. I remember Cliff Webb and Harold Ashurst. I used to have lunch with them sometimes in the newsroom when I didnt feel like the long walk up to town in the bad weather. John Gaskell used to make me laugh like a drain he was so funny. Wendy(I cant for the life of me remember her last name)used to join me for the walk to town on nice days occasionally. I actually have a photo of me sat in Terrys new sports car. Everyone was envious of it, and one of my friends dared me to get in whilst she took the picture. I had some wonderful times at the Obs and often wish I could talk again to my old friends. My dad George Jones (no longer with us) told me we were related to the Harlows at the Wigan Observer, and I went to school with Angela Harlow. I'm not sure how we are related but my dads mum was a Hilton before she was married and I think her mum was an O'Neil. I hope I've given you some names you didnt have, and if I can think of any more I'll let you know. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me at any time at the email address above.

Hi Christine, yes Terry is a Liverpuddlian and he's fine, like you he started work at the Observer in 1973. The people in Accounts were Frank Croft and Frank Flanagan...other members were, Tony Bond, Ann Bailey, Gaynor Dickinson, Geoff Finney, Doreen Keating, Jim Melling, Joan Smith and Carol Williamson. I hope some of these names will bring back great memories in Acc/dept Christine, and thanks for your comments.
