Robert Harlow, left, receives his Christmas cheque from Bert Webber, a national officer of the Natioal Graphical Association, at the Raven pub on Wallgate. It was practise for the Wigan branch to give £5 to each retired member at Christmas. Robert, served 56 years as a printer, and spent the last 40 years of his service has machine manager for the Thomas Wall company which founded the Wigan Observer. This photo was taken around the 1960s, and £5 was a tasty sum at that time.
