This Photo was kindly passed on to me by Clarice Smith, the wife of the late Derick Smith. Derick spent most of his working life in newspaper affairs, not only in Wigan, but all over the country. Derick is seen fifth from the left back row. Can anyone shed any light of the occasion.

Not sure of the occasion but he lad standing next to Derek on the back row looks like Mark Ashley. Now active with publishing in Standish and Stalwart at Wigan RUFC and all round top bloke.

Colin, I don't remember this presentation, unfortunately due to the layout of the building at Martland Mill contact with other departments became a bit limited but it looks like the advertising department. I have spoken to a neighbour who worked at Martland Mill during the 80's and she tells me the lady wearing the choker round her neck is Bet who was the manager of the Classified ad dept. and is probably a presentation to her when she left. Next to Bet is Janice and behind her and to the left is Carol Morley. On the back row next to Mark Ashley is Alan Rimmer (reporter) John (surname possibly Callon, a photographer) not sure about the next two then there is Ken Fisher who worked in the publications dept. Colin I am finding all your photographs of the Observer fascinating, they are a history book in their own right, you have obviously put a lot of work into this, please keep it up.
