My mother, then Margaret Lang, wrote that this group photo was taken at Highfield School in the early 1930's. We identify her as fifth from the right in the back row, aged about 10 years old. At the time, she lived in Tunstall Lane, Pemberton, where her father had a butcher's shop. We have no information about the light and dark sashes the children are wearing. ( Unfortunately it has not been possible to restore the section in the top left corner of the photo obscured by a thick dark diagonal line )

Their son was an English teacher at the TLS. in the late 1950's. I think he played cricket for Highfield. Could this be your mother's brother?

My mother now in her late 80's says the sashes would have been for a sport's day because they used towear them at her school. Different colours for different houses and children didnt have school sports kit in those days. Couldnt afford it.

To Ron Hunt: Yes there were two brothers in the family, both teachers, Rowland ( English ) and Michael ( Maths ). They also both played cricket for Highfield and feature in a 1963/63 team photo posted to Wiganworld - see Sports, highfield c.c, Item #: 5874. Members of the family were very pleased to see this image as they did not have their own copy!

Andrew if you look on the Thomas Linacre topic you might find some photos of him there. He taught me English for one year.
