Found this on the 1955 OS maps. Wasn't there in 1930 or in 1965. Anyone got any information?

Alderman T.Ramsden opened extensions to the Wigan Summer School at Ainsdale on the eighth of June 1939.

Did anyone in the Wigan/Omskirk area remember going to Lancashire Education Committees Summer School near Whalley / Clitheroe? It was at Wiswell at the foot of the Pendleton Fells. I would have been about 12-13 yrs old when I was there.

Must admit I've never heard of it. Has anyone any photographs of the place?

Went there from the Bluecoat school for two weeks,Must have been about 1948. Then went lots of times as my dad was the caretaker,as he was an ex miner the Southport air did him a world of good. The shrimp carts used to give us any "dabs" cought up in the shrimp nets.

A nice post, Brian. And 1948, eh? . . . the year in which I was born.

In the top right hand corner is The Lido. We spent many a sunny day there, splashing about. It always seem to be sunny
in Southport !

No matter how hot the weather, the water was always freezing at the lido. It's hard to believe there was a lido there at one time. It was great fun in the summertime. I went back a couple of years ago to the exact spot - it was completely desolate.

I never knew there was once a railway station in Lord Street, but I do remember it as a bus station

How right you are, Helen. And the lido has been depicted so wonderfully-well on the old Railway Posters. You really must see them.

Always remember hiring the "wool cossies" the gusset used to trail the floor when you came out the water. Somehow don`t think you`d fancy wearing somebody else`s swimwear now.

I also recall an open air roller skating rink in the area - not sure exactly where it was. It was there in '65 anyway when I went with a friend. You could hire the skates - it was very crowded as I remember.

I remember the shapeless, woolly thing, itchy too that I used to wear for swimming.
I think I posted a pic in album/people/Bradshaw of sunny day at the Lido with my brother, sister & cousin Mavis Bradshaw.
There seemed to be hundreds of people there enjoying the sun and having fun.

Helen. Thanks for the lead to your 'Bradshaw pics'; they're great, . . . and India, eh?

Hi I added the map to a Southport group and someone commented that children sent to the school didn't tell their mates as they were "ashamed" of being singled out by Social Services. This seems to me to be extremely unlikely. Can anyone clarify particularly Brian Bradshaw who attended?
