Staff of Hindley and Abram Grammar School around 1910. The lady in the large headwear is Ella Millicent Lowe, daughter of Jane Lowe who built Garswood House on Atherton Road. The family were the owners of the Balmoral Brewery for a number of years. Any further information on the house or the family greatly received

Hi Winnie, there's nothing really specific I'm trying to pin down now, just wondering if anyone with local knowledge knows anything about the family or brewery. I do realise it's a very long time ago.

Jane Lowe, who built Garswood, was the daughter of William Unsworth, who owned the Balmoral Brewery and then it passed onto the Lowe family. There's a family vault in St Peter apparently, although I haven't been able to see that. I do know the Balmoral Brewery owned a lot of pubs around the Wigan area, so I just feel I should be able to find out more. Wishful thinking probably. Oh, and I'd love to see inside that house, see how much of the original features remain.

Fascinating photo Kevin. One of my ancestors lived very close to this school at the time. The staff member on the right of the back row, has a look of Mr Chipping (Robert Donat the actor in the 30's movie...... Goodbye Mr Chips!)

Fantastic photo for the date. The 3 younger ladies look like they've just dropped off a St. Trinians film set !

Not sure if you're still interested in learning more about the Lowe's and their descendants but I'm one of them. The Brewery belonged to part of our family and we have a beautiful large lithograph of it. If you're interested I'll get back to you with more detail.
