Could the girl sat on The Teachers left be Dorothy Charnock?
no, it was Irene Griffiths..... but not ME(the Irene Griffiths who posted the photo). There were TWO Irene Griffiths in that year.....isn't that odd, as it isn't such a common name as, for example, Ann Smith; you could easily expect "Ann" and "Smith" to occur twice.
The teacher is Les Atkinson who was a pupil at H.A.G.S when I was there in the 50s and the girl on the middle row 3rd from the right looks like Jill Pass
yes, it is Jill Pass.
John, just realised you may mean the girl on the teacher's left as we look at the photo, and not the girl who was sitting on his left facing the camera.I think that was Sandra Lloyd.
This must be the smartest school photo ever.A credit to the school.
Brings back memories - lads along the back - John Ashton, Paul Robinson, Eric Hart, Jim Thorley, Dave Bithell, me, John Grundy, Roger Lowe, Fred Edwards. Not sure of all girls names but think middle includes Christine Marsh, Diane Westhorpe, Christine Shaw, Jill Pass, front Liz Cottrial, Linda Mckee, Valerie Gray, Sandra Lloyd, Irene Griffith, Barbara Wood, Wendy Hitchinson and Mary Storey
hi, John.you lived right near the school, didn't you? The girl next to Mary Storey was Wendy Huntington, but well-remembered! Hope all is well with you and with everyone on the photo.
Actually lived between the main school building and the dining hall - was half way through mi dinner before those having school meals! Also seem to remember Gillian Barratt on the middle row - sadly no longer with us I believe
Yes, Gillian sadly died under tragic circumstances, a mum to two young boys at the time.....such a terrible shame.
I still have a copy of the photo! Hi to anyone reading this. I regulalrly see Roger Lowe and David Bithell, and had a chat to Mr Atkinson a year or too ago in Standish.
Hello John, I had given up hope of any further comments. I remember you and your unusual middle name. Mr. Atkinson was quite a heart-throb with the girls! Hope all is well with you and yours and thankyou for the comment.
Hello Irene; good of you to respond. Apologies for the poor spelling/typing last time. Yes I still have the 'odd' middle name, and yes, I'm well, thanks. It does take us back, looking at these pictures.
I was in the same year but in 5G(?)Tony Glover was one of the lads.John 0liver was a big mate of mine.I remember Jill Pass from infant school and also Barbara Wood.My dad was the local vicar at the time (St. Peter's).I stayed on into the 6th.form.I hope everyone in the photo is still in good health and spirit.
memories are coming back.Besides best mate John (Oliver),I also enjoyed good friendships with other lads on that back row .Roger's back garden accommodated cricket or croquet.Fred I seem to remember as a cheeky chappie. Some of the lads were Latics supporters whereas some of us were League supporters (Frankie Parr,Eric Ashton et al).I've also had a good look at the staff photo. Most of them I recognise.P.S.Wasn't this the year we did HMS Pinafore?
wow this certainly brings back some wonderul memories I have this photo but coudnt name everyone Thanks Irene
Hello Sandra, I remember you and am so glad you've seen the photo; I check every so often in case there are any further comments but had just about given up hope. Isn't it odd looking back over all those years? Hope all is well with you.
I don't think that I have a copy of this particular form photo, but interesting to note how many girls had changed since the 1A form in 1964. Only Ian Riley (as I recall) had left from the boys (at the end of year 1)- otherwise we remained the same group of lads. Les Atkinson was just about the best form teacher we had and, as I recall, we had him for two years (years 4 and 5)which was somewhat unprecedented.
Hello, Paul, how nice to hear from you; I had just about given up hope of anyone else commenting on this photo. Yes, I was I form 1C when we all started there in 1964, and went to 2A, then stayed in the A form until 5A when I left. Paul, it's hard to believe it was all 50 years ago! If someone had told us we'd be in contact via something called "the internet", we wouldn't have believed them, and yet in our minds we're still the same. We would probably pass each other in the street now with no recognition, but I can see you as clearly at 11/16 years old as if it were yesterday. With all good wishes to you and yours, Irene.
Television on Tuesday 2nd December 2014 reminded me of this photograph. Mrs Oliver was watching a program called The Chase, 5 oclock ITV (don't usually watch it) and she said there's a lady from Wigan on TV. When I looked to see there was a "Barbara from Wigan" on as a contestant. May be barking up the wrong tree but reminded me of Barbara Wood! As I said may be wrong, suppose we have all changed in fifty years! Friknin as they say round here!
I don't watch it either, John, but wish I had that day. Thanks for your comment.
just a shot in the dark have been"wandering " around this website would love to catch up with anyone from the photo, remember some but sadly not others for whatever reason. Would like to be enlightened Liz
Hello Liz, and thanks for your comment. I remember you well.
Hi everyone, only just spotted this. Now retired and living in Bath - been here for thirty plus years. Great to see this photo and all of your comments. I still come up to Hindley every few months to see my Dad who is now 99!
I'm trying to remember who our brilliant maths teacher was and whether he is still around?
Mr. Tomlinson, Fred, and no, he is no longer with us. Hope you are keeping well.
Belated thanks Irene, all fine here. Sorry he's no longer here - I owe him a lto. Best wishes,
Fred
I was at HAGS but two years ahead of this form year. The 'other' Irene Griffiths and I were together from '66 to '68, while we were at HAGS. We met again many years
later and are getting married in May of this year.
Oh, how lovely! Many Congratulations to you both. Please remember me to Irene. I wish you both every happiness. Irene Roberts, (ALSO nee Griffiths!). xxx
Hi Irene just seen your message. Thank you. We were married on 5 May and are now on honeymoon in Barbados. Hope you are well.
I am so very happy for you, Irene! Have a wonderful life together! xxxxx
This photo certainly brings back some memories! (I'm second on the left - Mr Atkinson's right - on the front row)
I recognise Margaret Hardy (left end of middle row) and Phillip Ball (left end of back row) and the Luck twins Lenice & Kathryn (middle of middle row)
Christine, none of those you named are on this photo.
I was recently fondly remembering school days and came across this by accident. I clearly remember everyone on the photograph and would love to hear from anyone who may recall me. Hoping everyone is keeping well.
Hi Valerie, if you remember I recognised you out walking your dog near Haigh Hall about five years ago. Don't think you recognised me at, first but could have spent all day reminiscing! Was sorry to hear about Malcolm, remember him well. Hard to believe where fifty odd years have gone. Best wishes to anyone else on the photo, keep well! John
Hi John. Lovely to hear from you. I do remember that day and, as you say, we could have been chatting all day. I couldn’t believe you recognised me ( must have retained my youthful looks !! ) Never know we may bump into one another again on our walks. All the best. Valerie.
Hi John, I always remember you as being a really nice lad. Among other kindnesses, you gave me your old Scalextric set and wanted nothing for it. What a star!
I have mixed feelings about the time this photograph was taken. I never settled and missed weeks of school during the 5th form, bunking off to play pinball and such like. Even ran away a couple of times. Mind you, I discovered rock climbing during one such jaunt and subsequently it became my career for 20 years. So there you go; it's not all about exam success.
Wonderful to see these faces again and imagine what's become of us all.
