Hi Fred, I seem to remember this shop as Fosters when I lived in Tunstall Lane, did your family own it later?

Yes Jimmy, The shop was closed during the war and used by the WVS. My mum and dad took it on in 1945, first as a storeplace for our produce when we had a pony and cart and later it was opened up as a grocery shop and general store. My wife, Edna and I ran it for 12 years from 1963 and then it was sold on to a hairdresser, finally becoming a dwelling house.

I remember the shop well, Auntie Annie seemed to sell just about everything, buckets, firewood, pegs are things I remember. I loved being allowed in there with her when she was serving someone. I also liked the Sunday teas in the back. I would get the bus from Holland Moor & when I got to the shop Fred was usually in the back kitchen, he had his glad rags on because he was off to see Edna. We would have our tea then all set off for chapel round the corner. Uncle Fred kept chickens on land round the back. He was a lovely man, seemed to have all the time in the world for you.
