An idea of the huge numbers that turned out to watch the annual Wigan Whit Walks in June 1968.
Here the procession makes its way along Powell Street with the Drill Hall in the background and past Hilton Street on the right.

This was the last Whit Walk for all the combined Catholic parishes and mine as well. It's just passing St John's presbytery. It was a sad occasion knowing it was the last one.

Does anyone know why the Whit walks stopped? I have memories off being on Caroline Street with my family watching them, seemed like most of Wigan turned out.

Looks like the Blackburn Catholic pipers leading, saw them many a time warming up in St Patrick Street and Rupert Street before St Patrick's walks moved off. Anyone recognise the Church banner, Sacred Heart?

Elaine, I was wobndering that too. I remember the walks at Holland Moor, loads of people walking & lots lining the roads to watch the procession go by.

This was my first walking say and my last. I walked with St Mary's and remember starting from the Market Square. I seem to remember that I knew this was the last one, but I don't know why they stopped.
