Although it was a religious occasion it was also something of a 'fashion parade' for the ladies! Every effort went into looking smart and donning their best clothes. It wouldn't have been 'what shall I wear' as if they had a choice but a case of 'it will have to be my one and only best dress' ! I suspect those ladies wouldn't have had that many clothes at that time as we have nowadays.
