An era of real poverty, and deprivation.

And yet they are quite smart in that fashion of the day Albert and have 'scrubbed up' very well. Salt of the earth women with a lifetime of 'making do' past, present and future -a war behind them, the Depression and the next war to come.

I agree they are fashionably dressed and the men are also very smartly turned out. A really interesting photo.

Women had it a lot harder than us men in those days and perhaps nowadays as well,we would be lost without them.

It makes my blood curdle what men endured in war and the work they did down the pit Sam! Both men and women were made of sterner stuff in those generations as we all know.

I know what you meant Sam - and I agree with you.

I'm sure someone will put me right if I'm wrong, but my guess this is Liverpool Road and the sign for the Daily Sketch is in Stephen Street, with present day McDonalds on the other side of the road.
