The following are the names, (at the time the photograph was taken,) of the young ladies on the photograph. Their names are, from left to right. Veronica Ashcroft, Margaret Grady, Sheila Westwood, Agnes Bithell, Sheila Wilson Holmes, Mary Arkwright, Frances Campbell, Maureen Magarty.

Looks like it was taken at the top of Makinsons Arcade.

Ron. The small sign to the left of the photograph appears to read Ellors(Using a magnifying glass on the original photograph). The other larger name, I am unable to read, but the word underneath is, rainwear.

There is an old lady's face between the 6th and 7th girl...????

Does seem a bit strange Lizzie, especially in contrast with the man in the trilby. I hadn't noticed it.

I think you have a face that was not supposed to be there Albert...it looks as if she is wearing a veil .....hmmmm...may. I take a copy please...

Have got the original size up on the screen....and you can see right through her....now it is really interesting.... There is no real explanation why she is there....she is very much older than the other girls..... :)

Comment by: Lizzie down under on 19th December 2013 at 08:36

The explanation is....the veil has blown from one or the other girls each side....there is a face of a lady standing on the pavement and the lady's face is showing through the veil....pretty sure that is what has happened....nearly got a spooky picture.... :)

Lizzie, the doubt I have is, that Mary's veil would have had to extend far out to her left, and the edge does seem to drop down just to her left. Frances veil does not extend out to her right, it appears to drop straight down. It could not be any of the other young ladies veils. Although having said all this, your explanation is the most logical one. It still seems very strange to me.

Lizzie looking at the photograph more intently. I am now convinced that you are correct. The face is of a young woman looking towards the procession, and not of an elderly person, I first thought it to be.

The shop on the right was James Mayers Rainwear.
