Photo from the O'Connell family, perhaps from the late 50s.
Sent partly to illustrate the bridge carrying the Pemberton Loop Line, seen in the background. The only photos I've seen of the loop line are of this bridge, seen the background of Walking Day pictures. The gate post to the right is to the Hall Of Ince, where St Mary's Vicarage was in Mr Bryson's time.
The bridge and the embankment went, along with the Hall, in the 70s, the houses fronting Warrington Road earlier this century.

Nice one Rev. I was showing the pic to my wife, she's one of the small girls at the back. Picture was from mid 50s.

The street to the left of the houses was where Dr Duffy's surgery was situated, and on the left of that Street was St Mary's infant school, Lower Ince. In the 1930s/1940s Miss Kenyon, Miss Naylor, and Miss Ormerod were the teachers'. Mr Entwistle, at the junior school, next door was the headmaster. Westwood Lane was the first left under the bridge. Miss Marsden was my teacher, when I went into the junior school in 1942.

I think there was a big House that stood back just behind this photo on the right hand side. I think there were a family named Collier lived there in the early 60's.

It's a dirty filthy mess round there now, the place looked much better then, than today.

Comment by: Jimmy on 13th December 2013 at 18:01

Gary, Spring View looks a mess now thanks to Wigan Council .Not the same View I was brought up in.

Comment by: Garry on 13th December 2013 at 21:36

I'm not talking about Spring view, Jimmy, but Lower Ince where the photos been taken.

Comment by: Jimmy on 13th December 2013 at 22:55

Gary, sorry about that .photo is in Lower Ince not View .St Mary's was my infant School. Then Spring View 1959/1963.Only pass through Lower Ince and Spring View these days both areas run down .Not like old View and old Lower Ince when I was growing up.

Spot on Jimmy, I fully agree. When we all had our own Councils, ie Ince, Hindley, Abram and so on, it was much better cared for. Wigan Council now days have a massive area to cover and I supose keep tidy. Bring back the Urban District Councils.

The person who hides behind "no name" its Lower Ince I'm talking about. But while you mentioned Spring View, of course its run down than it was before..just look at the state of the police station.

I'll tell you one place that's improved in recent years, and that's Platt-Bridge. Bye-the-way is Platt-Bridge Labour club closed, it looks derelict to me, apologies if it's still going.

Comment by: Jimmy on 15th December 2013 at 20:07

Garry, not to sure about Platt Bridge Labour Club .Had some good Saturday nights in there with my Uncle Jack ( many years ago ).No name ,we will call it straight on Spring View as you say we have a Pasture and an. OutsideSwimming Pool ( Trencie Pond )

Eileen Charnock was the queen. June Ellison and Ann Maiden carried the arch. Brenda crook is on the left in front of Ann, right at the back just visible is Kathleen Heaton, I'm out of sight behind Eileen's head. Barbara Hardman was at the back too. I remember some first names of the others but many years have passed. As an old viewer myself, I know it's different now, but to me it's still God's country and I'm proud to have known some of the people who lived there. I was born in Marlborough Avenue and lived there for 24 years.
