John, the Horseshoe pub is on the left across from(still to be built) Wigan Baths

Comment by: Derek Bond on 18th July 2011 at 16:18

Would the Bill Gabbot mentioned be the same man who at one time had a Chemist's shop in Whelley, on the other side of the road from the entrance to Moore St East?

Comment by: dave b on 18th July 2011 at 16:33

Douglas House would be on the right if you took the photo now

Comment by: dave b on 18th July 2011 at 16:54

yes its the same Bill Gabbot

If you were to go down Library St. today, turn left at the bottom (at what was The History Shop), then go directly across both lanes of the dual carriageway and head towards Scholes, the dip you would still go down today is the same one that the processsion is walking up in the photo. The bridge in the photo carried the tracks into Wigan Central railway station which closed to traffic in 1964. Can't recall how long after closure it was before the bridge was demolished.

Thanks all, got my bearings now. Wasn't the Horseshoe pub the one facing the baths on Millgate? and was there an old Museum there also?

Comment by: Derek Bond on 19th July 2011 at 15:38

John, The Horseshoe was the pub on the apex of Scholes and Station Road, the part in Scholes would be just out df sight to the left of the photo. I've never made the connection before, but I suppose it was named from the frontage which curved in a horseshoe shape from Scholes round into Station Rd. I think the museum you are thinking of was in Station Rd. just up from the pub. I seem to remember that the building was also the Children's Library at some stage. Wasn't the pub you mention opposite the Baths in Millgate named The Baths or The Bath Springs?

the photo was taken in Millgate Scholes only starts at the other side of the River Douglas bridge
the first shop in Scholes was Fosters motorcycles

Comment by: Gerry on 19th July 2011 at 20:59

Out of interest: this part of the road is Millgate! I didn't know this until a relative moved in Douglas House,in the 1980's!!! Beyond the old railway brigde, behind picture, is Scholes. The only boundry now I suppose is Douglas House!

Comment by: Duncan on 20th July 2011 at 10:35

Gerry, you're right it was Millgate there, Davenports' were there from the late 1800s till the buildings were demolished in the 1980s then they moved to Library Street till the business closed in the 1990s. The old children's library was in Station Road with the museum upstairs above it.

Just for a comment Millgate went all the way up to Scholes crossing. I don't know when it was changed or why but at that time this photo was taken in Millgate
