The photo was taken on Manley Street you can just see Manley St Methodist Chapel in the background

Comment by: Joseph on 10th November 2010 at 17:48

I remember Mrs Arpino well and her husband Fred, they used to get the coaches up to go to "the lights". They had twin boys if I remember right, such a sad day when she died in 1972, a lovley lady indeed.

What are the rosettes all the ladies are wearing?

Comment by: Colin Harlow on 11th November 2010 at 10:11

I remember Fred and Winnie and the twin boys, Vincent and Anthony, a lovely family.

This certainly is Manley Street alright, with the Community Centre as it is known now in the background. These well to do ladies with their hats shown walking down here in those days is certainly a novelty. Lived on this street all my life growing up, tried living away for 3 years, but it never worked, as the pulling power of the place and such great people here made me return in ernest. Been back now 6 years and live with the missus (girl who always lived round the corner from this shot as kids) a few blocks up in front of the procession shown. What a great foto - Cheers!

The rosettes the ladies are wearing are for the Catholic Womens League
I am walking with my mother Winie Arpino, the first on the picture aged about 3 years old so the date would be about 1950. And yes she was a real lady. So sadly missed

Many thanks for that information, all the ladies (and you) look very smart. My aunt, Nellie Birchall also attended the church I think. She and Uncle Joe had a daughter Rita.

Comment by: Eileen Sumner Nee Arpino on 12th November 2010 at 16:42

If the Rita lived in Caroline ST Ince yes Idid know her she was a few years older than me.

Comment by: Wigwann on 12th November 2010 at 18:10

Yes, the Birchall family lived in Caroline Street.

i have this pic i presume my dad took it? and i know most of the lovely ladies but cant put a name to them all , mrs harppino not spelled wright,at front, third back is mrs thomas our dinner lady mrs gusso who lived in bryham st, my grandma margaret mawdsley back with light coat on and feather hat.

Comment by: Moz on 14th November 2010 at 12:43

Josie, the Mrs Gusso that you mention, was her first name Lizzie and lived up Higher Ince (not sure where Bryham St is), if so she was always round at my Grandmas in Battersby Street when I was little in the early 80's and they always had their afternoon chats in the back room over several cups of tea for what seemed like hours. If it is her, I remember her fondly as a really nice person.

hi moz,ime not sure about her name it could have been and theres not many mrs gussoes in ince i wouldnt think i probably spelled her name wrong anyway, she had a daughter called monica and maybe a son? bryam st was just under the bridge past battersby st on left in fact bell green school(little old one)was in same st so not far from your grandmas.

Comment by: josie pennington nee beckett on 14th November 2010 at 17:29

eileen, i do appologise for spelling your name wrong , maybe you knew my sisters, madeline, sandra, pat beckett they are older than me i was born 1950.

Comment by: Moz on 14th November 2010 at 18:39

Hey cheers for clearing that up Josie, that's got to be her judging by your description, it was just a little blast from the past when I saw the name. This has got the cogs going, going off my memory and she was older and greyer in the 1980's, but I would put my mortgage on that's her fourth from the front with the black handbag - am I right here?

Comment by: josie pennington nee beckett on 15th November 2010 at 20:02
