A view looking into the strata bunker driven into the Lower Florida seam between L18s main gate and L18s return.In the event of a conveyor problem in the Wigan mines access,coal from the Winwick area would be stored here so the faces could keep producing coal.The bunker would then be emptied at a later time ie: between shifts.
The scroll which was basically a modified coal cutter would be used to convey the bunkered coal back on to the panzer seen on the right of the pic.

Is that Merv Tuck in the background ? , he was normally asleep in there, i'd never seen him stood up i didn't realise how tall he was !!

If you did not pay attention (or fell asleep) the plough went over you and allmost buried you and you had to dig it out, it happened to me and the coal face had to stop

That place was installed by ste wills,jimmy peet,billy whiz and myself dave mathews was the chargehand,happy days powen.
