Art,
My wife (Susan nee Lyon) was at the school around this time but only in the infants, so not in the picture. She would love to know the name of the headmistress. She remembers going to the senior class to see her and remembers being terrified by the cane she kept on her desk.
She will ask her mother who might remember more names. Why is it our mothers remember our childhood friends names when we don't?
If you'll send me your email I'll send whatever info I have. Also, any chance of the original digital scan file for printing to show the Mother in law, the picture WW is a bit low def for printing.

Johny5 sorry I DID get the name wrong.Your mums friend was Ann Marsh and the girl with the striped cardigan on the same row as your mum has a possible look of her

THE LADS ON THE BACK ROW THIRD FROM THE LEFT
ERNIE SHEFIELD JHON DUCKER GEORGE ASPEY ARTHUR HILL
I am on the photo - nee Maureen Williams. My first name was Elizabeth and since I married have been known by the above as my husband preferred my first name. The girl by the name of Ellison was called Audrey and was the girl in the front row centre known as Dorothy Rogerson! Also the boy on the back row at the top right was his surname Lunt! There was a boy named Alan Abernethy but I can't place him! I dont seem to recognise any boys apart from Arthur Hill. I remember a tragedy at school when Derek Ellison drowned in the large pond at the back of his house! Its amazing how one can still recognise some of the girls after such a long time!
To Art - as a boy did you live in SLG in Giants Hall Rd and did you have a brother!
Yes I did Maureen, Your Dad was Percy wasn't it? Not so many I see now, I'm still in the village, most are long gone. I see Kath Collins ocasionally around town, plus one or two others
A few deceased now :o(
Ken Stephens, did you live in the row with Bert Seeds shop on the corner?
YES ART I LIVED IN THE LAST HOUSE AT THE OPPOSITE END TO BERT SEEDS SHOP I HAVE A BROTHER DEREK WHO WENT TO S L G SCHOOL
I ART I THINK THE TWO BOYS NEXT TO MR PENDELBURY MAY BE ROY AND ALAN SHARPLES FOURTH LEFT MID ROW JIMMY GRAY WHEN I STARTED S L G SCHOOL THE INFANT TEACHER WAS MRS BLYTON AND THE JUNIOR WAS MRS EMERY
Ken,I'm struggling to picture you & your brother, but if I'm right, your dad was Harold, worked down the pit.
The Sharples brothers wer Roy, (still going) & Joe (deceased)
The lad in the dark zip-up top is Terry Marshall, on his right is Alan Abernethy, then Roy Fox & next to him Billy Gill.
To Art. Good to hear from you - yes - my father's name was Percy, Good to hear Kath Collins name mentioned. She was a friend of mine and I haven't seen her since her first baby was born! Do mention me when you next see her! Haven't been to SLG since the early 1980's. There must have been a lot of changes!
Does anyone know the date/year of the photo!
I ART MY DAD WAS HAROLD HE WORKED AT JOHN PIT I MOVED AWAY FROM S L G AGED ABOUT TEN MY BROTHER HIS FOUR YEARS YOUNGER THEN ME I NOW LIVE IN COPPULL MY MATES AT S L G WHERE GEORGE ASPEY AND BILLY GILL I WAS IN THE SAME CLASS AT SCHOOL HAS ON THE PHOTO
I would guess, as Billy Gill & myself are the same age, it would have been 1952 when the pic was taken.
Elizabeth, do you not live locally now? I don't think you'd recognise the village if you've lived away for any length of time, so much building has gone on..
Thanks for reply re date of photo Art. I left the village in 1963 when I married and haven,t been back since 1981 when my mother died! I must return some day, but I like to remember places as they were. I still keep in touch with Mary Fisher (now Stringfellow - who lives in Standish). She told me about this site!
