Parbold

This shot depicts a Leyland Octopus coming over what I believe to be the canal bridge in Parbold , with the windmill being just out of shot to the right of the frame , although the title of the shot states
“ incline approaching Parbold hill “. ( which it obviously isn’t ) .
My only evidence being a modern google street view comparison shot .
It’s possible that I’m mistaken , but I’d be interested to learn what others think .
By the way Ray , you can stick this one on as well if you like pal … and what do you reckon the trailing wagon is ?
Wouldn’t be a Thames 4D by any chance would it ?…. or could it be a Comet ? One of those rivet counters on TNUK will definitely know .
Another great pic Ozy, I think it's where you say it is that looks like the pub on far right.
Definitely the Windmill bridge, very good comparison on WW, Places, Parbold, 13th pic, first page.
Looks more like they are testing the bridge to me, thanks for the photo's Ozy a blast from the past that as been said
The 8 wheeler Octopus with almost certain a 600 Leyland engine.
The lorry at the rear is a Ford Thames 4D, with a diesel engine. Some of
the earlier Ford Thames lorries had a 4 cylinder petrol engine, known as
a " Costcutter ", and some of the older ones had a Ford V8 petrol engine.
The lorry at the rear; I was guessing it to be a Leyland Comet - but I give way to Ray's superior knowledge, it must be a Ford 4D. In the late1960s I bought an ex WD Ford Thames lorry with v8 petrol engine from Hackett Bros at Bryn for my Landscape Gardening business. I soon had the 4 cylinder Diesel engine fitted for reasons of economy, it was taken from an ice cream van in a scrapyard down Foundry Lane; Jones is name that I seem to recall. My Ford lorry (sadly no photos) would carry about 5 tons
I agree the rear truck a Thames 4d very similar to morris commercial truck. John L Gaskell,
the scrap yard at Foundry Lane was indeed Jones, two brothers own it, one was George but can't think of his brothers name.
I remember Todd haulage down Foundry Lane too, used many 8 wheeler Scammel routeman trucks.
Garry, around 1973 a couple chaps were laying some drains for me near what was Harry Woods glass shop in Billinge Rd Pemberton. They went in the Railway Pub -Ken Gee was landlord - for a couple of pints; around one pm they came running back, grabbed their gear and said "We're not coming back today, George Jones is in the Railway buying drinks all round" from memory they then went with George to the Victoria pub at Hall Green, then into some Labour club until George ran out of money.
