In the forties, and fifties, wasn't the Wigan Observer Offices, in Rowbottom Square?, on the right hand side, as you entered from Wallgate. I seem to remember a large picture of a ship (A liner)on the wall of the office.
Yes Albert, Rowbottom Square was indeed the Wigan Observer printing and publishing offices, from 1853 to 1966.
The Grapevine Home Brew shop was up those stone steps, owned by Ron (Pimblett?) who also had home brew shops in Pemberton and Orrell, though his sister ran this shop, I made some really good, excellent tasting wines from the ingredients that were sold in there in the 1970s.
Colin. I've got this memory of the picture that I mentioned. Can you verify as to whether my memory is correct, or not?.
This 1980’s picture is taken from a similar spot to that of today’s PAD photo, now modernised and in the process of being converted to flats.
In the 1800’s it was a Chocolate Factory supplying products for Rothwell’s shop at the front on Wallgate.
