Pemberton Conservative Club summer outing circa 1928. Bowling competition, good meal, and then on to Layton Institute at night.

Thank you for your constructive comment Jarvo
My grandfather Joseph Brewer (6th from left on back row) was certainly a Conservative, he did play bowls and he lived lived that end of town.
How did you identify the photo? Do you know anyone else in it?

Funny how people used to get dressed up to the nines to go on an outing; as late as the 1960's I can remember my dad sat on Blackpool beach wearing a suit, shirt and tie.

Susan: I have a vast knowledge of local history and I am well read on the subject. Things don't change much: the times are only different by the figures and dates. Working men have never altered.

I agree that it may be a Conservative Club outing, though none of the men in the photo were prominent Conservatives,Joseph Brewer signed Lord Balneil's Nomination papers when he fought Wigan in 1923.I thought he lived in Poolstock Ward

Thank you for your comment Donald. You are right in thinking that Joseph Brewer grew up in Poolstock. My grandparents were married in 1910 and are living in Poolstock in the 1911 census. When Joseph died in 1938 they were in Haigh View, Swinley. What exactly were the nomination papers for?

To be a candidate for Parliament or the Council it is necessary to be proposed & seconded and supported by eight further electors. In the old days many papers would be signed,to indicate popularity.Balneil had about 42
