Then Tom Collins a Shevy plumber made one of them his office and yard.
Mick; Arnen`t these in Shevington? Isn`t the Leeds and Liverpool canal the boundary between Gathurst and Shevington?
Ernest your right I think the river Douglas is the boundary
Yes Mick; the boundary is the river Douglas.
Can remember the building that had been the post office had a shop type window with oil lamps on display. There was also an old house, down in the valley behind these houses that still seemed to be inhabited in the late 70s
Yes Gordon there was another two cottages on the left in the dip as the road starts to go up.
Woman who lived in one of them was Tom Collins the plumber secretary
This view shows the houses from Gathurst Lane

On Rons link you can just see a bit of the two cottages in the dip on the left
Re Ron`s link; yet another photo says Gathurst when it should be Shevington! Or were these houses on the left at the bottom of Gathurst Brow?
As far as I can make out this photograph is looking in the general direction of Wigan and the buildings were on the left of the road when travelling from Gathurst. The last person I remember living there was Mr Ball think his first name was Johnny and he had some sort of building business down Miles Lane in Shevington.
Old Shevvyite there was a Fred Ball he used to work at Balls farm and after his days work he rode is bike up Gathurst lane, he lived in Miles lane
i think the tall building on the far left was the post office and many many years ago i knew a gent who was born in the building and later moved to Tontine
In the 1840s, one of this row was a pub called the Globe Inn, kept by one of my ancestors.
