Could the photo be older? I seem to remember that there was a railing outside Woolworths in the late 50s/early 60s. I often saw my uncle leaning against it with others when I was walking up Standishgate to catch my bus after school.
I'm no expert but I knew Wigan in the late 40's, early 50's & don't ever recall a zebra crossing at that point, also the car on the right is a Ford of some sort. So I would say the photo is the early 60's ?
The car is a Ford Consul mkII, they were introduced in 1956.
The car is a Ford Anglia 105E; it was introduced in 1959. The railing is just out of the picture, behind the car. A crossing was always there and I remember crossing it many a time. A great photograph.
The car is definitely a Ford Consul MkII. Made with slight variations from 1056 to 1962.
Rumour was that the railings outside Woolies had warm water running through them in winter to stop the "idlers" who leant on them all day, from freezing to them !!!
Bet that's a Conroy's lorry on the left, what you reckon Mark ?!
1056? Ten years before the battle of Hastings...
You're right Jarvo - should have read 1956, but you probably guessed that!
This picture looks like the Beatles on Abbey Rd. Perhaps this was where they got the idea!!!**
I'm wrong. It is a Ford Consul. I'd forgot all about them. At first glance it is very much similar to the Anglia which had a bugger of a gearbox...
Hi Helen it could well be a Conroy wagon and I think I can just see that box with my name on , that your looking after for me.;)
