Someone mentioned in a thread the other day that they didn't know what Jim Sullivan looked like.

I've added a bit of colour to this old cigarette card.

Extract from:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Sullivan_(rugby_league)
"Jim Sullivan (2 December 1903 — 1 November 1977) was a Welsh rugby league footballer and coach. Born in Cardiff, Sullivan joined Wigan in June 1921 after starting his career as a rugby union player. A fullback and prodigious goal kicker, he scored 4,883 points in a career that spanned 25 years with Wigan and still holds several records with the club today.
He made a combined total of 60 appearances at representative level with England, Wales, Great Britain and Other Nationalities and his 26 appearances with Wales was still a record for many years after his death. He also represented Wales in British baseball."
I saw him play in his last league match at Central Park.

Good luck Richard. It may interest you to know that my father ( Jack Bowen), also a Welshman, played in the same team as Jim, notably the Lancashire Cup win of 1938, and knew him well. Even when, in later years, Jim fell ill but still managed to get to watch Wigan at Central Park, Jim would insist dad sat next to him at the following game - and when Jim insisted on something you did it! He was a fantastic athlete and rugby player he never failed to impress everybody who watched him.

Richard, a son of his worked at H J Heinz, Wigan, when i worked there in the 70s, 80s and 90s, so it's possible that he is still in the Wigan area

He did have a son called Kevin - I don't know if this is the same one Roy mentions above.
In his later years Jim Sullivan lived in Milton Grove, Orrell. His widow Eva was still living there in the late 1980s. I used to call in and see she was okay when I was the bobby for that area.

Confirmation that Jim and Eva had a son called James Kevin (same names as Jim) b.1937 and Jim passed away in 1977 aged about 74. I think at one time Kevin was a butcher.

Yes it was Kevin, for some reason only known to his workmates, he was nicknamed 'crazy horse'.
