Is that the overhead power lines for the trolley buses ?

Comment by: Horace on 23rd August 2014 at 09:43

Definitely the Monaco in the background, scene of many a great night out in my younger days

Comment by: Garry on 23rd August 2014 at 12:26

Monaco, now the Rose Club. What was it called before the Monaco around this time in 1952.? Yes the overhead power cables for the trolly-buses that ran from Atherton to St Helens.

It was the Rex cinema in those days. The street to the side was Church St where the trolley buses used to turn round.Good photo.

Comment by: Albert. on 24th August 2014 at 11:17

It is so very unfortunate that the authorities, cannot allow Christian Church processions, to parade along our streets, and thoroughfares, to show the face of Christian faith, and unity, in a country, where Christianity is the dominant faith of the country. Surely just one day per year could be set aside for such an event, in our northern cities, and towns, where such processions were more predominant. All Christian faiths could be assembled together, in one procession. Other large processional events seem always to be catered for. These very peaceful, and joyous occasions were always enjoyed by thousands of people. Traffic considerations shouldn't always be the prime consideration.

It was the Rex in the photo, the little extension at the front, was Berts Bar,I got banned from the Rex,I was only eight, but Mr Cellini's daughter let me back in.

Well said, Albert. I agree with you entirely. But going back to The Monaco.....does any Hindleyer ever actually call it "The Rose Club"? I doubt it! It will always be The Monaco. WHY do they have to mess about with things? If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Comment by: Merc-owner on 25th August 2014 at 21:32

irene its just bricks and mortar. Thats how I see it!
look at P-A-D 14 Aug at 18:41.

merc-owner, I take your point and apologise sincerely if I annoyed you on the photo-a-day pic. I hadn't realised the car in the photo was yours or I wouldn't have said anything; I just thought it had been taken by someone visiting the car-show. My husband is a car enthusiast and would love your Merc. We have had cars in shows ourselves, but unfortunately they hold no appeal for me. The remark I made was just about cars in general and was not meant personally. I'm glad this pic of the walking-day has been posted as I would never have realised I had upset someone, and I would like to put that right. Irene.

No irene love, you didn't annoy me, I just want to put things in perspective.x

I remember trolley buses in hindley and travelled on them with my mam to Atherton I was only four when they were dismantled in 1956. As an adult I enquired at hindley museum about the year they stopped running, I was told it was because of the suez crisis. Any one know what the suez crisis had to do with hindley trolley buses?

Irene I agree that cars are just boxes on wheels..they get you from a to b. keep you dry and warm.. They are just another tool we use to make our lives easier.

Comment by: irene roberts on 27th August 2014 at 10:53

Thankyou, Gerry, but my point was really that one car is very much like another in my eyes, but we all see things differently and are entitled to our opinion. I DO agree that there are far too unnecessary cars on the road.....children being run to school when they could quite easily walk etc......but my husband works all over the place and couldn't do his job without a car.

Comment by: Albert. on 27th August 2014 at 12:57

Another point is. You cannot equate convenience, in relation to expense, and we all know what the cost of motoring is.

Comment by: DerekB on 27th August 2014 at 15:57

Gerry, the Suez crisis created an oil shortage and petrol coupons were re-introduced briefly. Since trolley buses ran on electricity, then produced largely from coal fired power stations, the abolition of the trolley buses was delayed for some time until the availability of oil based fuels returned to normal. Incidentally, the trolleys weren't taken out of service until 1957.

Comment by: Gerry on 27th August 2014 at 17:41

Thank you DerekB I can't argue coz the the info I was given was from the museum people... But you've made it clearer. Bet hindley wish they still had trolley buses now. Or trams like Manchester

Comment by: Alan on 27th August 2014 at 19:15

Gerry, firstly, Hindley has a capital H.
Cars are more than boxes, they are vital in this modern world we live in. Yes, Irene's quite right when you see cars being used when most children/parents just live round the corner from school. People call cars boxes, because they don't understand them or they can't drive. Some people like myself love and care for them, they are essential for work and family life.

Comment by: Gerry on 28th August 2014 at 08:33

Alan, Cars are boxes with wheels on, they are tools to be used to travel from place to place.

Gerry from Higher Hince.

Comment by: DerekB on 28th August 2014 at 15:44

Gerry, I gave you some bum information re the trolleybuses in my earlier posting. The last service ran, in fact, on the 1 Sept 1958.

Comment by: Alan on 28th August 2014 at 19:00

Gerry almost right, they do take you to A+B, correct. But I'll try and educate you a little further. Boxes are what chocolates come in, or hampers are in at Christmas. Maybe you don't understand cars at all, or maybe can't drive at all...some people, just don't get it, if your one of them,I fully understand THAT YOU HAVE a box on wheels..Hope it passes it's MOT.

Comment by: Hindley man on 28th August 2014 at 20:26

Alan, he's from ince what do you expect. the wheel on his box are off a pram.

Comment by: Gerry on 29th August 2014 at 07:08

Alan, my brand new cars (yes two) don't need an MOT or my brand new motorbike either.

Comment by: Ow on 29th August 2014 at 10:24

Great picture of a walking day and not a car in sight. How did we manage.

Comment by: Alan on 29th August 2014 at 19:13

So you have two boxes on wheels and a moped. Boy, the damage to our planet. Do you live in a box.
Well said Hindley man.

Comment by: Garry on 29th August 2014 at 19:17

Gerry, you will do after 3 years, but I can't see you owning them! They could be toy cars.

Comment by: irene roberts on 30th August 2014 at 19:37

Hindleyman, I come from Ince but I think I have put a favourable comment and have apologised to the gentleman I upset with my comment on his Mercedes. There is nothing wrong with coming from Ince, I assure you.

Comment by: Garry on 31st August 2014 at 11:17

Gerry look at item number 25466, I think you've put you foot in it! Always remember what you say, otherwise you are made a fool

Comment by: Albert. on 31st August 2014 at 11:51

Hindleyman. The connotation of your comment, and the generalization of it, regarding the people of Ince, both lower, and higher, will be regarded as a slur, by those people. Irene's last paragraph, in her latter comment, is certainly correct.

Comment by: Hindley man on 1st September 2014 at 10:57

Albert, it was said tongue-in-check, have you know sense-of-humour?????

Comment by: Albert. on 1st September 2014 at 12:32

Hindleyman. I will give you the benefit of the doubt, as I am sure all good hearted Ince people will. We will now put the matter to rest.

Comment by: Alan on 3rd September 2014 at 14:17

Know sense? Someone else needs spelling lessons
