one wrong broady! fell into the trap!

Comment by: Neil cain on 30th August 2013 at 15:43

Had a union 7 a-side programme with John Gray playing for Loughborough Colleges at Twickenham. Probably still in a box.

Comment by: broady on 30th August 2013 at 16:12

Presumably it is 5th from left on the Back Row??

Comment by: Scholes Malc on 30th August 2013 at 16:25

no clues!

Comment by: broady on 30th August 2013 at 17:00

It isn't Gregory on the back row but I can't think who the first left is. Maybe Whittle??? Look forward to the answer.

Comment by: gideonfel on 30th August 2013 at 18:23

I'm sure broady is right. That looks like John Whittle on the left back row.

Comment by: Scholes Malc on 30th August 2013 at 18:28

correct gideonfel - that was broadys one error
John it is - from Castle Hill Road, Hindley - played alongside his brother Tony for many a year & his daughter Jodie is a leading light at St. Pats

Scholes Malc,
Do I get a prize for my second guess. It is over 30 years ago.

1970S..WHERE'S Bill Ashurst?

Comment by: Colin Harlow on 31st August 2013 at 07:22

Top left Dennis Boyd.

Comment by: AB on 31st August 2013 at 10:16

Is the third man on the front row Colin Whitfield ??

Comment by: Roy on 31st August 2013 at 11:12

Bill Ashurst either didn't play that day or the photo was taken 1978 or 1979, he played at Wigan from 1968 to 1977

The bad old days of Wiggin Rugby: Thugs Utd on show here...Look at the expressions on their faces...This lot won nowt and eventually propelled the club into the second division. Dark days in the club's history...A sad photograph, indeed.

Comment by: Bill on 31st August 2013 at 20:43

Definitely John Whittle top left, lovely lad.

Comment by: broady on 31st August 2013 at 21:29

So team is as my first guess except Whittle rather than Gregory.

Comment by: Jarvo on 1st September 2013 at 01:26

Whittle rather than Gregory?...The problems ran deeper than that...

Comment by: Jarvo on 1st September 2013 at 01:46

Broady: you're not listening....

Comment by: Scholes Malc on 1st September 2013 at 07:50

correct broady - I'll buy you a gill not a pint!

Comment by: Steve on 1st September 2013 at 10:52

Jarvo, would you have told them that to there faces?????????

Comment by: Colin Barnes on 1st September 2013 at 12:45

Causing some confusion this one.Its defo John Whittle.I have looked at all my records of all wigans games from 1972-5 in all comps and this line-up does not exist. It is 1972-73 season when Vigo and Gray signed ,i really do think its the lineup for the ward cup against the wires in 1973 as there were no records kept of that match.I know Vigo had his hair shaved the week before for the 7's ,which wigan won and Vigo and Gray both made their debuts .

Comment by: Keith on 1st September 2013 at 16:22

Colin, I think you may have it spot on. I couldn't match this line up either, perhaps a report in a local paper might reveal all.

WARD CUP. Memories, This was a preseason friendly Beteen Wigan and Warrington for a cup sponsored by "Wardonia Razor Blades" Does anyone remember the little man with a black overcoat who mingled through the spectators at Wigan's matches selling Razor Blades ? Can't imagine that happening now.

Comment by: Alan H on 5th September 2013 at 14:28

AB, I remember the guy who sold razor blades. They were Wilkinson's which had just come out to try to break the monopoly of Gillette. I think they were 2 bob for 5
