Is it me, or does the map not show Melbourne Street?
On a street map of 1938 Adelaide st was renamed and called Melbourne St.
Does anyone know why they would change the name ?
Where is this please.
The tramline at the top of the map is running in the direction of Wallgate bridge towards wigan North western. The top of Adelaide Street is now where 'Go Outdoors' is. Caroline Street can be seen to the right of Adelaide St. St. Joseph's is the RC church.
Thanks Betty, I wondered about that. Both Aussie cities.
Probably named after Queen Adelaide, the wife of William the Fourth, who Queen Victoria succeeded.
Lord Melbourne was Victoria's first Prime Minister.
The Australian cities were also named after these two people.
I know they were all Australian names but why would you ever change the name of a street and when was it changed.
I haven't got an answer ann21 but there has been some discussion at http://www.wiganworld.co.uk/communicate/mb_message.php?opt=f2&opt2=&msd=198401&offset=160&subject=Adelaide%20street%20to%20Melbourne%20street
Also you can see references to Melbourne St. and Adelaide St. on the same document at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/o/l/Jackie-Holgate/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0439.html
Adelaide St was there in 1845, when the 6 inch OS Map was surveyed, as were Victoria Street, Caroline Street, Queen St and Princess St. Victoria was the reigning monarch, Caroline was the Queen of George the Fourth, and Adelaide the widow of William the Fourth.
Looks like either the council or the builders were going through a patriotic phase, when it came to naming them.
My dad Thomas Wood lived in Melbourne st with his brothers James, john and sister Doris did anyone know them and who else lived there round the time they did regards Tom
Does anyone remember thomas and irene mcsorley lived in Melbourne st 1958 any information would be nice
