Isn't the train already on the Whelley line? I'm guessing, but isn't it about to take the Chorley Road overbridge and thence to the main line at Standish Junction?
I was going to make a comment that the Loco looked very " clean ", then I decided to check out 44871 and it appears to be still running some of the best Tours all over the place, good old 44871. I might even have worked on it at Horwich Loco. Works.
I think that she has already left the WCML at Standish Jct. and is dropping downgrade on the Up Whelley line towards the subway for the public footpath where the Whelley line becomes a two track railway again, Chorley Road underbridge bridge will be but a short way behind the camera. This is the only way this view could be with the houses on Chorley Road off to the right as they are here!
Another good shot Colin/Mr. Green.
The road to the right is actually Rectory Lane. The train is travelling south and the rear of the train is passing the site of Standish Station.Brian Green who took this photo all those years ago is still an active rail enthusiast living in the Warrington area although his trips out these days are limited being 80 years old.The photo is taken from the book THE LANCASHIRE UNION RAILWAY by Dennis Sweeney.Oldbill.
Great just great, John Taylor is spot on.
The road to the right is Chorley road..old bill
Chorley road is 200 yards to the right. The houses you see are in Rectory Lane which meets Chorley Road by the old Bleachworks.I lived there for 40 years.
The houses to the far right is on Chorley rd, without a dout. Lived at red rock for 50 years.
And without a doubt the houses are on Rectory Lane. The house on the right was owned by a former captain of Wigan Cricket club and I spent many an hour playing cricket in his back garden watching trains on both the WCML and the southbound Whelley line. The rear of the train is passing Rectory Lane Bridge.Chorley Road and Red Rock Lane are 200 yards S.E. of this photo.
