Great photo! Where was this pub?
Can't think where this pub is/was, does anyone know?
The pub was in Bridge street Hindley, just before the Cross Keys
Nice to see these old photos of 'Ingley!
When was the pub demolished?
i think it was demolished in the early sixties
Was it near the entrance to Rayner Park?
Yes, near the entrance of Rayner Park, probably named after John Rayner, a mine owner.
my grandad and grandma were the landlord and landlady in the 50,s there names were robert thomas and lily thomas
I definitely remember it now. Looks a really well built pub, what a shame to demolish it, same with the Cross Keys, they added character to that part of Hindley.
I quaffed a few in there as well as the Cross Keys also the Horse shoe just round the corner from the Keys, Old Joe Greenwood used to play the piano in the horse shoe at one time, as did Bob Walls played the drums, now there was a drummer
my auntie and uncle were landlady and landlord of the horse shoe hilda and albert butterworth in the early sixties
My maternal great grandfather John Houghton Heath was licensed manager of the Cross keys Hotel in the 1920s onwards.Had a daughter Elsie who used to play the piano and married Thomas Eccleston of Liverpool Road, Hindley.
if it was number 31 Bridge St think it was converted to shops accommodation my parents as i lived there when i was around 4yrs late 1940's i remember the place very well. it was a very scary place esspecialy the cellar.
My mam and dad was the landlady and landlord in the early sixths Tom and Doris
This was built about 1904 .
My great grandmother Margaret Lowe was the licence till her death in 1936.
That hotel replaced an older wheat sheaf. The landlord was William topping who had previously had the bull on castle hill. Grandma took over after his death.
My great great uncle ran a Wheat Sheaf Inn on Leyland St in Hindley until his death in 1861. Obviously this building is well after that time, but can you tell me - is this building on Leyland St? I tried to find Leyland St on the online map, but am wondering if it was renamed the Liverpool road since that's what keep spopping up.
Carol Crook - my grandmother was a domestic servant John Houghton Heath and his wife in 1921-ish. Was the Cross Keys at 41 Bridge Street?
Hi all my grandparents had the shop cross road from cross keys pub but it used to be a pub does anybody have any information on it please.
