Orrell

I've seen this photo a few times in the past Ron, and as you say, I think it must be Orrell, Liverpool.
The only place it conceivably be in Orrell Wigan, is the stretch of Orrell Road going past Orrell Lodge (now Wish FM), but I don't think it is. Just shown this pic to an elderly Orrell (Wigan) resident in their late 80s, and it rings no bells with them.
It is Orrell, Wigan - looking up towards Orrell Mount from
approximately where the now demolished Abraham Guest High School was on the left. To the right is Orrell Lodge, the
former Education Offices, now WISH FM.
I don't think it is that stretch of road, for a couple of reasons. On the right now there is a stone wall around the Wish F.M. building, and others next to it which appear to be at least early 1900's. In this photo it is showing iron railings, also there isn't any incline in the road and in the distance there appears to be a T junction. I also think the road would be much wider to facilitate the tram lines.
its most likely Orrell or Orrell Park in Liverpool. Unlike Orrell, Wigan, the Liverpool ones have been subject to a lot of construction and changes throughout the 20th century so chances are the road is still there, but now has housing on it either side and the walls demolished and the trees gone. A quick google of Orrell Village, shows a liverpool census listing an area of liverpool as Orrell Village.
to see what i mean about the changes, there is an old map here ( http://www.francisfrith.com/orrell-park/maps/ ) of orrell liverpool, compare it to google maps now and you can see roads widened, houses/estates built.
Maybe some of our Scouser friends may recall Orrell village Liverpool and give their opinions.
Could be orrell lodge road near to st lukes church
I'll take a longshot at Orrell Mount being on the right and Orrell Gardens on the left. I have a map of the area and the ornamental gardens were over the road. Just a punt like.
This picture was used a few years ago in one of the Old Wigan calendars that the recently closed Book Discount Centre used to sell. I had the impression that it was actually Orrell in Liverpool though at one stage I wondered if it could be near the old house that is now John Rigby College on Gathurst Road.
I can understand Andrew's reasoning re the possible location of this pic, but as it was taken in 1908, the terraced houses between Howards Lane and Orrell Post and also the Methodist chapel, all of which were standing at this time, would be visible. The road also seems to end in a 'T' junction, rather than a crossroads.
Similarly, re (the other) Mick's suggestion it could be Lodge Road - if this were the case, the high embankments of the old reservoirs would be clearly visible on one side or the other.
I still think this is Orrell, Liverpool, which at the time of the photograph was a rural area. I seem to remember this photo appearing in a Wigan paper some time ago, followed later by a correction stating that it was in fact Liverpool district.
It's up on the wall in the Brocket
Yes it is Orrell in Liverpool
Pretty sure its Orrell in Liverpool as know the area and looks like the t junction facing you is the bridge road from Walton vale shops. As you turn left and go over the bridge is Orrell Park station on the Ormskirk to Central station in liverpool line.
