Wow! Not a view I've seen before - but then you had a unique viewpoint. I remember the pens still existing when I came here in 1996, but they became untenable because of vandalism, including the cruel slaughter of hens, soon after, and gradually fell into decay. Is it okay if I print this in our next magazine, please?
Looking at the pic again - the 'crop' in the garden is a bit unusual - tulips. Were they grown for sale, or for show? Was it a winter use of the land, to be replaced by potatoes or other vegetables?
this looks like where the new houses are now !
Ok to use the picture Rev. My dad grew allsorts but mainly veg. The local tip where we used to play is to the right off picture.New houses now cover the pens and tip.
Complete WOW. Lovely to see, what is now our back garden, looking so lovely. Very nice picture. :o)
In the early to mid 40s, my mother used to send me to these allotments for rhubarb.Price, three old pennies, for quite an armful.
Hello Mick,
I used to live next door to you at number 3. I was born there actually in the days before you went to hospital for everything.
I couldnt believe it when I saw this photo. This was the view from my bedroom at the back, I was born in 1957 so maybe I'd just been born when this was taken. I live in Hindley Green now, but I miss Spring View, the old Spring View so very much. I seem to remember that your dad liked brass band music, or was it military bands? I used to play in the sandpit in the garden to the right of this picture, and he used to have the back door open when he was in the garden. I used to be marching about to it!hahahaha I couldnt have been very old but I remember it like it was last week. They were nice times weren't they Mick? So much has changed. Thank you for sending that photo in. It's brought back so many memories. Too many to mention here. I hope life's treating you and yours well. All the best. Christine.
Christine, thanks for the comments, your mum and dad were good friends as well as neighbours.Good memories, keep well.
