Yeh the pub must have been knocked down about 1950..right? and the farm in the back ground a few years after that,
wonder what year this was taken?
There was 52 pubs in Hindley in 1955, not many left now! they went with the many pits!

Looking at the text at the bottom of photo it appears it was taken June 1948 or 49

1949 the photo was taken, its not a farm in the background it is a row of terraced houses which would you believe are still there and lived in ,there are also council houses built arond them and in front of them

Only just seen this photo. A great reminder of what it was like in that part of Hindley. Incidentally, I remember the original Hand and Banner [shown here] being knocked down around 1958 - give or take a year. I recall it vividly because I ripped my new jeans sliding down some of the planks on the building site. Behind the pub originally was a bowling green, and they built on that, and where the old building was, they built the car park. I also remember the tall scouts fence that overlooked the singing room. We used to sit on that fence and watch the occasional group or singer on Sundays! Happy days!

This photo must have been taken between 1955-58.The reason being is just beyond you can just see the new houses in All Saints Grove beyond the terraced houses on the right .The new house project were built in 1955/6 and the Banner Demolished in 1957/8.I was born at the side of the Banner in 1956.
