if you look at the woman in the background she doesnt look like shes dressed in 40s clothes,it looks like she has trousers on and long blond hair with a bag over her shoulder but wouldnt like to guess the year? its a lovly photo though mick.
looking more closely at the woman if she isnt wearing trousers she must have a short coat on, and the long blond hair may be a head scarf not very 40s what does anyone else think?
she is not wearing trousers, as for the head scarf not sure
Definitely not wearing trousers, and looks like long blonde hair, not a scarf. Looking at the rest I'd reckon 1950's.
Does anyone know the history of these houses? Why were they built there? At one time, were there more houses in this particular location?
There are more pics of the cottages under the same 'Westwood' heading as this - but more, and further information, under 'Lower Ince'.
My Mum reckons that the children are standing in front of her Auntie Hilda's house.
Thanks for the comments,i know this picture was'nt taken in the 50's because i was born at 43 Little Westwood in 1949.the photo belonged to my late mother.
My Dad, Brian Green was born at No 7 in 1936 and according to him the power station was built in the late forties.
My mother was born in the house at the far end of the row in 1922.The Halliwell family members inhabited many of the houses from 1860 until their demolition.I believe James Kay
was at least part owner of the Westwood colliery. A shorter row of houses was built at the back about the turn of the century. My mother collected rents for Mrs.Kay.
Mick are you related to my mother's aunt and uncle Sarah nee Halliwell and Ernest?
mygriffiths,i had a Uncle Ernie(Smalley)& Aunt Sally,i believe her maiden name was Halliwell.I have been told that her father Jem Halliwell used to have a little shop in the third house from the end of the long row.
That's right Mick and my mother still refers to her grandad as 'my father at'shop'. I remember going when I was about 4 years old.The shop was a large trestle table in the front room and I was amazed to see a whole box of oranges on there.
Hiya. My aunt believes this is a family cousin, Evelyn Johnson, later Green (on the left) and her best friend Christine Lillis. Evelyn was born in 1941 so I reckon that it was taken about 1945/7?
I am so happy to see this pic and read the comments. My mum was Christine Lillis and I so wish that was a pic of her. It is a boy and girl so could not be my mum and her best friend for many years Evelyn Green {auntie evelyn to us}. It is sad to thionk they have all passed on but it made a young man smile to think of it.
