Hello Bill - Would you by chance be related to Ernest Bithel (deceased) ... he lived in Ashton-in-Makerfield with my aunt Nellie Green. My uncle Ernie was from Scholes.

No1 was where my aunty lived Anny Derbysher No2 was where my grandparents Mr Mrs John Banks learned how to ride a two wheel bike there in 1955 aged 7 free wheeling down the hill my dad frank went to St Georges at the back.

I served my apprenticeship at D. H.&N Tyldesleys in Greenough street,the rear entrancewas off Crawford Terrace there was an arch at the bottom end as well a bit tight when loaded up.

i remember this street and if i am correct there was another little bit of forgotten wigan at the back of these houses called jackson square with a methodist chapel in it as that is where i went to sunday school

Correct Roy, but I think the entrance to Jackson's Square was from Scholes almost opposite McCurdys shop. I'm sure there was a chippy on Scholes at the entrance to it. I went to St George's school in the late 1940s with a lad called Brian Gerrard who lived in Jackson's Square. It's a long time ago but I seem to remember that his father worked for a firm who had premises in the square and the house Brian lived in was owned by the Company. As I say, it's a long time ago but I think the Company dealt in fats of some description.

hi derek my fathers name was gordon matthews and he lived for a time with his grandmother in crawford terrace his mother was frances matthews nee bond could we be distant relatives i know she had brothers called william and tom and also sisters who lived in leyland surely their could not have been two families in crawford terrace called bond would be nice to hear from you

Hi Roy are you Roy Thompson? Sheila we will have to stop meeting like this! There was a chippy on Jackson Sq Look at the street maps I uploaded of Scholes which shows Jackson Sq. From memory is was an eerie place on dark foggy nights.

My Grand Parents, Bill and Jane Parkinson, lived at number 7 Crawford Terrace in the 1950's and 1960's.

The chapel in Jackson Square - which I used to frequent - was not Methodist but Church of Christ, which believes in adult baptism by total immersion. Today we have the Longshoot chapel in its place.

My grandparents lived at number 2 my auntie and uncle lived at number 1 my dad grew up with his brothers and sisters in Crawford Terrace ,we’re twins lived a few doors away believe there surname was Bond think it was Jean and Lillian used to spend my school holidays with my grandparents .

Ilived in the very 1st house going into Crawford terrace in the late 40,s early 50,s, our postal add was back mount street, I remember john smith, and the twins jean and Lillian bond, john lived half way up and the girls lived in top house, there was also june brown who lived in hairdressers at top of Greenough street.

where was Back scholes was it near gaskell street
