Here we can see the other end of the 1885 deviation line. The train is approaching along this line on the left of the picture, whilst to the right can be seen the track bed of the earlier 1828 original line. Just out of frame to the left the line travelled through a very nice stone block faced cutting as it approached the point where the line to Leigh swung right and the later 1874 line to Roe Green Jct. on the route from Wigan NW to Manchester Exchange via Tyldesley diverged. I had a couple of nice walks through this cutting and the 1/4 mile tunnel on the Leigh line which was all cut and fill with iron beams and brick jack arches between for the roof. The similar tunnel on the Roe Green line was already filled in by the time I got to it in 1982!. Taken again from the calendar mentioned in the previous photo it is dated 1967. The photo is credited to Mr. H.T. Scowcroft.

Very interesting historical information about The Bolton&Leigh Railway,especially about the 1885 re-alignment of the Leigh line
