That's right Rob. The street on the left is Cross St. but the houses on the far side have gone, replaced by some 1960's horror which used to have a travel agent, an electrical shop and a take-away of some sort
prior to the 3x shops mentioned by Dave this was also the site of Standish picture house,i think it was called the Palace with Hetty Charnocks toffee shop on the corner.
Notice the men on their haunches against the walls of their homes. Typical of miners - who used to sit like that at pit-bottom, waiting for paddy rides inbye, or to be allocated the face and job they'd have that stint. I still occasionally come across an old chap sat like that outside his house nearby.

In order to extend the tram network into Standish, Wigan Corporation instituted a programme of electrification in 1905 and the overhead power lines can be clearly seen in this photo. But in 'the roaring twenties',the trams made way for buses and the last tram ran on 28th March 1931.
