This is lovely! I remember Pendlebury's and Marks and Spencer when they looked like this. Across the road were Timpson's Shoe-Shop and Freeman, Hardy and Willis, and at one time, maybe further into the sixties, there was a fashion shop called Van Allen.
Don't think you are far out with the date Dennis, but the girls appear to be wearing miniskirts which would put it a bit later than 1960
Mc Candlish's just visible at the top, used to make the best rock cakes!
It is a lovely photo; and no litter to be seen at all. I had a Saturday job at Pendlebury's when I was at school and earned the princely sum of £1 for the day!
Must have been taken on Sunday evening judging by the shadows and lack of traffic.
This is how I remember Standishgate as well Irene but about
1954 before we moved south...Pendleburys just the same.
Just noticed Moss's mens shop at bottom right hand corner. This was where all the trendy young lads bought their casual wear in the 50s. Next to it was a ZIP dry cleaners which was fortunate, because nearly everything we wore had to be dry cleaned then.
does anyone remember oxleys department store, it wernt on standishgate though, it was round in station road at the back of woolies, my mum used to get curtains and bedding and a winter coat for me, all with a provident cheque
I remember Oxley's, but my Mam always called it Poole's, which was its name before it was Oxley's. There is a photo of it as Poole's; go to "Places", then click on to "Station Road" and a group of photos will come on. Oxley's /Poole's is on the second photo.
KAM...A new pic showing Oxley's just gone on The Album.Feb. 21st.
just spotted it irene thanks, i didnt think it came right up to the corner though, i remember my dad taking me to see father christmas there , magic, they made it just like you imagined his little home would be, bet oxleys never thought 50 odd years later a little girl would still remember and treasure those memories
I reckon it's more like 1969 or 1970. Great pic anyhow!
Standishgate on a sunny day. It is probably later than 1960 as the white car behind the bus looks like a Vauxhall Victor FC or Cresta PC introduced around 1964/65. The Corporation bus has three rear windows and is long front entrance PD3 EJP501-510, GJP8-19, HEK705-707 and HJP1-11. The later shorter PD2s, JJP502-509, KEK739-750, AEK1-10B, DEK2-3D, DEK4-7E, and FEK1-9F had two windows. Pendleburys was rebuilt after a fire (I don't remember what year), and when Debenhams took over. Now it is Wilkinsons that is here.
