Yet another GEM
Brings back a lot of memories - bring on some more
Was the sweet shop on the left of the photo near Miry Lane?
Henry, it probably was next door to the New Star Inn which was at the corner of Wallgate and Miry Lane
I think the sweet shop in the pic was the one near Miry Lane and was owned by a family called Ogilvie.
There was a sweetshop just further down from this shot called Nelsons.
the bit of Wallgate between Seven Stars and the station used to be a lively neighbourhood, it used to be my favourite bit of the journey when coming in to Wigan on the corporation bus!
This is a picture of Mrs Youngs temperance bar. You could buy hot vimto here and sit on a short bench to drink it.
Youngs was next door to Wallgate Post Office and Dr Petrie's Surgery. At the other side of the shop was an entry, Mr Malley's shoe shop, then a butchers shop, then Ogilvie's sweet shop (my grand parents). Even after twenty years the shop was often referred to as Nelsons, who were the previous owners!
