Our family came from Wallgate and my grandma used to go there so my dad told me,I don't know if it's true, but he said while she was watching a film,a voice came over the tannoy and said "Mrs Mcgovern, please go home as your son has nearly DROWNDED"-that was how he pronounced it,my dad like everyone learned to swim in the 'cut' as it was known then and had fallen in,God luv him.
