This pub was actually in Heskin the Sid Brook at the side of the pub was the boundary the landlord in the 40s was Green and in the 50s his daughter Mrs Bentham I still live in Heskin and we have only 1 pub now
AB as a child I was always fascinated by the 'cave' on the opposite side of the brook. I wonder how it came about?
I used to love to go here in the 1960's. They used to serve 'chicken in a basket', complete with a pair of disposable plastic gloves to eat it.
Local legend has it as the remains of a drift mine Actually that is in Weightington
In the 60's chicken in the basket at the Brook House Helen B was it really so long ago. Always good. Occasionally we would sit in the tap room and listen to the farmers telling stories.
Linda,
Yes, it really was in the 1960's. I was married in '68, we celebrate our Golden Wedding this year, and we used to eat there prior to our marriage.
There is an early drift mine on the opposite bank of the stream to the building. There is also a quarry in what was the large beer garden which is now a large pond. I stopped for a drink there before it closed and cut the trees that needed removing as it was being converted into a private house
