how lovely to see wigan like that again.
Much later on, they built a row of shops where the stalls stand in the photograph, with a covered walkway where the arched door into the market hall is. Leyland Paints was at the far end. My mother worked there for quite a few years.
I cannot remember the name of the covered walkway... was it Petticoat 'something'?
Nice one Syd and Trevor!
Dennis, I think it was called Petticoat Lane.
Boon's chemist was in one of the shops and CAssinelli's had a cafe there at one time.
Aye and we got our clothes from COUNTDOWN too
Dennis, when i was in my teens, I worked in one of those shops you mentioned. It was Carleys..or Carlies,a gents outfitters..and my boss used to give me some money to go and pick his wife's Birthday Christmas or Anniversary presents..and I distinctly remember running through the walkway to go into the Market Hall in a rush...he always asked me in my dinner hour..if only his wife had known who picked her presents.
Maureen, I seem to remember the shop you worked in was named Carleys of Blackpool. They sold some very trendy stuff when they first opened in the late 50s. I think that later they either moved there or opened a second branch in Rodney St where it met the bottom of King St.
The farthest away stall in the pic, was Bob Silcocks, Fruiterers, who later moved into the old fruit market on the Hope St side. I knew him well..
worked for his sons , bill + bob jnr in the old market , many happy workdays for me.
