Not seen this one before - great picture
Brilliant picture Looked like it was a better place back then.
This is of a day when some of my relatives could have easily been among those shown in this picture. A time and place I didnt grow up in. I just have to ask... does anyone know what the lightish image is on the left footpath about half way back to the corner? Is it someone pushing a small child on a cart or a bike? Fascinating!
I have enlarged it and it seems to me to be a wheelchair, or a bathchair as they were called in those days
My grandad was born in the Bulls Head Hotel in Market place in 1917. This is the clearest photo i have seen of it, thanks Allan
You can make out Allsops brewery sign next to the Bulls head pub Frank Randle used it in his act, after a large belch he would say " Byeee!! thats All Slops ale for thee"
thanks, aitch... I do believe you're right. after looking through my magnifying glass again, I can see the big wheel/s now!
can anyone tell me if the bulls head stood on what is now lloyds bank or Barclays, i read that it was demolished in 1938 to make lowes store bigger, not sure if this is true. Thanks
Interesting point Gerry and judging by Frank's life story it seems as if he certainly must have supped a lot of it. You've got to say also that judging solely by this photo the place seemed to have much more character than it has now.
There is no Character in Wigan any more, it's all been sucked out in the name of Progress...Such a shame !!
Not progress as such, Janet, more like vandalism by a gang of greedy meddlers with no thought for what people really want.
You said it best Mick...
