Hiya Keith, I was in the 3rd year I think when it was boxed in
I have to say, what brilliant photos. I feel like I was walking down those corridors yesterday. Why they got rid of that school, I'll never know. FAB!
The wood work room was Sam Hills when I was there, nice chap, he retired when I left in '53
Th metalwork, Barons, he spent most of his time lozzin' back in his chair, head on the blackboard dozin'.
There was no side cover under the verandah niether
hands up those who made a stool or a fire poker
Fantastic photos - what a terrific school Gidlow was - I organised a reunion some years ago and it was good to see so many people there. Mainly it was for the girls who left in l957 - and some of us still meet the first Wednesday in every month at the Chinese Buffet in Wigan, l2 noon, so if anyone feels like joining us, please do. It would be great to see you. Such a shame the school was pulled down. Great days to remember
I got walloped on back of legs off miss dixon in that corridor for singing the wombling song!!!
If this is where I think it is just before the door out to the playground then in 1983 when I was there it was science rooms, my teacher Mr Johnson oh Mr Johnson I think everyone fancied him, it was a great school, and what a shock to find its not there anymore, I remember we all had names for our classes in first year they began with a B there was barley Buxton and ??? In second year it was coniston canarthon and carnforth. And in last year it was Windermere Wrexham and ??? I remember we had a trip to whatever the name of your class was called going to barley and ip pendle hill talking about the witches with Mr Coulson eating out but ties at the side a the wall at the top of the hill because of the rain, oh what good memories
Please let me know if you have any pics of these years I went to bluecoat primary in wigan town centre which is sad to say is no longer there and then this school xx
wow blast from the blast. great pictures.
Anyone remember me and my cousin Stuart Middleton (Migzy). We attended Gidlow in the 1980s and have fond memories of being a childish pupil learning in the classrooms and clowning around at dinner time. Loved PE lessons and going swimming. Friday was my favourite day and after school usually in June and September we got in Stu's dad Johnny's smelly N reg Ford Capri and off we went to Blackpool for fun, thoroughly enjoying the FunHouse in our stockingfeet and riding the Grand National. Big Dipper and other amusements until the park closed. Then after chippy tea it was back home. Those were the days.
